What is Digital Printing?

What is Digital Printing?

The Basics

  • Digital printing skips the plates and rubber rollers to apply designs directly onto the print substrate.

  • Every print file becomes separated into four layers C-M-Y-K (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Black)

  • Relying on these four separated layers, the digital press uses electrically charged particles to attach color to the press sheet.

  • Keeping in mind, digital printing presses use a toner base or powder ink instead of wet ink, so the electric charge drives the dots of color into super accurate positions on page.

    Digital Print Process

  • Each layer of powder applied color will have its own varied dot pattern and density - which allows for the production of a wide spectrum of colors and designs.

  • It is the physical layering of these color dot patterns that produces the desired print output.

Advantages

  • Faster Turnaround Times
Avoiding the long setup processes, digital printing is great for expedited timelines, even same day printing.

  • Variable Data Printing (VDP)
Digital printing supports personalization, allowing businesses to customize each piece with unique text, images, or graphics.

  • Consistency
Since digital skips the ink and water, there is greater consistency in color and density across prints.

  • Reduced Costs for 'Short Runs'
Without time consuming setups, digital printing really shines for low volume jobs saving press time and excess material expenses.

  • Quick Edits
Changing copy or swapping out images for varied audiences is simple and effective - just make edits to the artwork.

  • Versatility in Printing Surface
Digital printing is great for a broad range of materials including paper and synthetics.

  • Reduced Inventory Cost
